AWN Insider Volume 1

The AWN isn’t a church, but to some, it is considered “holy ground.” I spent the better part of seven years wrestling at the AWN WrestlePlex—even a few bouts before it was known as the AWN, and I enjoyed each and every one. Simply mentioning the AWN brings a flood of memories to me, many involving the now defunct tag team of which I was a member.

Many fans likely remember the Warfield Brothers tag-team consisting of my brother Steve and me. Though currently retired, my brother was perhaps the toughest wrestler I’ve ever known. He truly lived up to his nickname of “nigh invulnerable,” which was a good thing, as our physical toughness was often tested against the very best to pass through Middle Georgia.

Perhaps no single team was more difficult to pin that AWN mainstays the Slaughter Pit. A larger yet less refined version of the Warfield Brothers, the combination of the Pitbull’s strength and tenacity coupled with Sam Slaughter’s technical expertise meant a long night for us. The Slaughter Pit has always been well loved—hell, even I’m a fan, but more often that not, the Warfield Brothers were able to sip by them, if a little worse for wear.

The Slaughter Pit once crashed our game of “Warfield Says” (do what we say a la Simon Says and get a free a t-shirt, maybe) with there own game: “Slaughter Pit Says.” There game wasn’t as fun; there version saw us getting beat down and having our prized Warfield merchandised ripped to shreds in front of our eyes. It’s still a great memory.

And the list goes on and on. I fondly recall the time we made Billy the Kid and “Cowboy” Steve Lowry eat pork rinds “like the rednecks they were” by literally knocking them down (with an assist from a chair) and shoving spicy pork rinds into their faces and up their noses. There was the week when we took it upon ourselves to conduct a live demonstration on how to properly brush one’s teeth for the Fort Valley patrons as we had become “disgusted” with their collective lack of oral hygiene. Then there was our lengthy, racy, feud with the Almighty Express that culminated in a vicious street fight that put us on the shelf for almost a month. And or course, there was the night we finally won our first taste of AWN gold, winning the tag team titles.

We wouldn’t hold them long before injury and personal outside interests prohibited the Warfield brothers from continuing as a unit, so I soldiered on solo-style. I learned quickly that though I worked well teaming with Steve, I could be a formidable, almost dominant singles wrestler. But those memories I will save sharing for another time.

Though more often than not, I did not “like” my opponent, I most always respected them; even Q-Ball. Yes, Q-Ball defeated me, ending my ability to wrestle in Fort Valley on Saturday nights last August. I’ve wrestled in many other towns in several other states, but Fort Valley in where I cut my teeth. I miss the place. I miss the fans. I would like to return and see all of the great fans there, but that can only be possible with the written permission of Mike Money or his appointed manager.

We may just have to see if that can be done, sooner than later.
